Dear Midland

Dear Midland,

From the tumbleweeds, the unmistakable smell of oil, the Friday night football games, to the most beautiful sunsets, I’m so blessed to call this special place home. You have been my safe haven, my launching pad and, most importantly, my hometown.

I can’t thank my family enough. For allowing me to try every sport I could with no pressure to have to “do” or be good at any of them. I was always taught to do my best, but more importantly to handle myself with poise and respect regardless if I lose by inches or win by a mile. They followed me everywhere around the country and world just to see me do my best and go after my goals no matter if I soared high or failed miserably. My parents taught me that knowing fundamentals and practicing discipline are essential in anything that you put your mind to.

To my COM family. It’s hard to find words to describe what COM has meant to me as well as all the people /families that I have met over my 16-plus years there. From Splash team all the way to the Senior group I was always challenged by whatever coach I had to test my limits and break new barriers within the sport. To all the swim families (Martins, Newmans, Scarboroughs, Kecks, Noormohameds and the Banes to name a few) who watched and cared for me when my parents weren’t able to pick me up or come to a meet, I sincerely thank you for your kindness and caring for me like I was one of your own.

And lastly, to the city of Midland. The support has been unbelievable. Thank you for showing interest and support to a young girl with big dreams. Making the United States Olympic Team is my biggest dream come true. Thank you to the people who send messages of love and encouragement expecting nothing in return. Thank you to the families who have traveled near and far just to see me swim professionally at a swim meet because I am your child’s favorite swimmer. I never take these experiences for granted and will cherish them forever. Not only am I representing The United States in Tokyo, but I also have the honor of representing Midland/West Texas as well. Truly one of my biggest honors.

I also would like to give special acknowledgement to Brad Swendig for always believing that the next level was right around the corner for me and Andrew Korda. who laid the foundation for me. It was with Andy that I started to believe my dreams could finally become a reality. Lisa Pham, for taking me in as her own daughter and making sure my family and I had everything we needed at all times. Last, but not least I want to thank Charles Koch. He was my biggest cheerleader whether I was competing at the highest level or just coming by for a simple visit.

Cheers to you, Midland! WE’RE GOING TO THE OLYMPICS!

With love,

Natalie Hinds
